The biblical story of Adam and Eve has shaped western societies perception of the roles and interaction of men and women for centuries. From the outset Eve is represented as subservient to Adam (his helper) and after they partake of the forbidden fruit, she became known as the source of original sin, responsible for all the misfortunes suffered by mankind.
The portrayal of Eve’s nature in the book of Genesis is one of a gullible, morally weak, disobedient, untrustworthy, seductress. Unfortunately, this characterisation has been insinuated so deeply into our culture that both men and women, consciously or unconsciously, believe it to be the natural condition of women.
Given the intimate, historical connection between law and religion, the story of Eve and other biblical text has provided men with the rationale and reason to curtail and limit not only women’s legal rights but also their social, sexual, religious, political, and economic freedom.
The current ongoing struggle for gender equality and empowerment of women is both inspiring and daunting. I can’t help but wonder what our society would look like if the bible had been written by a prophetically inspired female?

So thrilled - 'Essence' is exhibiting in Denver, Colorado!

My painting ‘Essence’ has been accepted into the ‘Contemporary Realism’ exhibition being held by Gallery 1261 in Denver Colorado! I am beyond thrilled to be selected and to be exhibiting with artists that I have admired for many years!! The exhibition opens on the 14th December (14th - 28th Dec) so if you’re in the area it’s sure to be a worthy visit. So wish I could be there to see all the wonderful paintings in person

“Contemporary Realism can be described as a straightforward approach to representation; it continues to be widely practiced in the contemporary post-abstract era. Realism within this exhibition is depicted in varying degrees, from hyper-real, which can be somewhat exaggerated, ironic and conceptual in its nature, to semi-abstract, enticing the eye with a more relaxed approach—each artist brings their own ideas and perspective to the table…..” Gallery 1261

Hong Kong Art Fair 2019

Earlier this year I was delighted that one of my mandarin paintings was being used to advertise the Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair. They did a wonderful job putting together the ads and really managed to make my mandarin feature so I’m very grateful. The exposure lead to a record number of sales for me and I had a fabulous time spotting large versions of my work hanging around Hong Kong!

Unveiling and Finalist in BNEPortraitPrize

So pleased to finally share my portrait -

‘Scott’

104cm x 69cm

Oil on linen

I had the pleasure of spending time with Scott Hutchinson (4th generation Hutchinson Builders) after being introduced to Scott as a sitter for the Brisbane Portrait Prize. Scott very generously met with me numerous times and I then spent the next couple of months trying to capture my impressions on canvas.  Unbeknown to Scott his friend Don O’Rorke had also commissioned the portrait as a surprise for Scott’s birthday.

Unveiling the portrait last night was a really positive and enjoyable event with both Scott and Don seeing the portrait for the first time.

Amongst the MANY goals I had for this portrait I wanted to capture Scott’s ‘distracted’ gaze and was very encouraged when both Scott and Don, unprompted, validated my achievement.  As an artist this confirmation is extremely rewarding and encouraging!

To add to my gratitude I found out yesterday that the piece has been selected as a finalist in the inaugural Brisbane Portrait Prize!! The exhibition will hang at the Powerhouse from the 30th Sep to 31st Oct

Finalist for the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize 2018

I am still feeling very grateful for my selection as a finalist in the DMNPP 2018 and thought I would share some progress shots of the painting.

This piece, ‘Hidden Rooms of Memory Welcome Me’, is the outcome of a concept currently consuming me. The idea of delving into our past experiences to attain personal insight and healing has forever intrigued me and as my youngest daughter, Bec, leaves behind her teen years my own fragile and tumultuous memories of this era fight for my attention. These portraits are styled with a 1970/80’s wallpaper landscape as reference to the appropriate period. I have completed numerous works in this series and will continue to do so as a means of giving voice, power and hopefully healing to my own youthful experiences. I truly believe even the most painful experiences can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful.

Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair 2018

A couple of my pieces are heading to the Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair 2018 between the 18th - 20th May.  Thanks again to the Lethbridge Gallery!  If you happen to be in Hong Kong do drop in...

Nothing more wonderful than a thrilled client!!

I received an email this week from a client in Santa Fe, New Mexico who wanted me to know how much she loved her Mandarin painting - hanging proudly in the kitchen of her beautiful home!  This type of feedback is what makes the long, solitary hours SO worth it!

If you have a piece of my work hanging in your home/office etc I would love to receive a photo of it in situ!
